Banana pineapple smoothie recipe

As many readers would know Sunday is market day for Brooke and I. Each Sunday we venture to South Melbourne markets to do the weekly grocery shop. Brooke is a woman on a mission when doing the grocery shop, methodically checking the items off the list, whereas I’m frequently straying from the plan. This Sunday Brooke turned around to see me holding not one but 2 whole pineapples (which, were not on the list). Pre-empting the question coming my way I said, “I’m going to make a banana pineapple smoothie”.

On the ride home, I now needed to back that audacious statement up so I Googled healthy banana pineapple smoothie recipe. To my surprise, I couldn’t find any, which appealed so I decided to make a hybrid of a couple I had read.

This is a quick and tasty way to start your morning. Simply combine your 4 ingredients, fresh pineapple, half a banana, half a cup of Greek yogurt, and 1 cup of Almond coconut milk (either plain almond or coconut milk will also work). Add half a cup of ice and blend for 60 seconds and your tropical banana pineapple smoothie is ready to drink.

With no added sugar this sweet and tangy banana pineapple smoothie recipe is secretly healthy!

Singapore Sling

Brooke and I are finally overseas on a well deserved holiday in Asia for the next three weeks. However, after a recent accident, I wound up fracturing my elbow a week before we were due to leave resulting in me needing to wear a sling for the next couple of weeks. Not exactly an ideal situation to be in but what are you going to do?

Well if you’re in Singapore like us, you try and find the funny side and head to the Raffles Hotel to enjoy a Singapore Sling in your sling! After a short taxi ride, we pulled up out the front of the beautiful colonial-style hotel where we felt like the ultimate tourist asking where the Long Bar was for the famous cocktail.

The Singapore Sling was created at the Raffles Hotel at the turn-of-the-century by Hainese-Chinese bartender, Mr. Ngiam Tong Boon. As history says the recipe was originally created for women, given its attractive pink colour and fruitful flavour. Due to the volume of tourists that visit the bar, it is definitely a drink enjoyed by all.

If you do decide to make the special trip for a taste of this historic drink, be sure to eat your value in the free peanuts, as unfortunately, this tourist attraction doesn’t come cheap!

Healthy Purple Smoothie

It’s no secret that winter in Perth is usually pretty timid, that being said I have still managed to be struck down by the dreaded and often lethal “Man flu”. For more info on this debilitating illness you can read more here. Facing an uphill battle I decided a healthy purple smoothie was my only chance of survival. Plus, what’s not to love about a smoothie? They are so easy to make, hardly any prep is required and you can almost put anything you like into them and end up with a pretty tasty drink. The only thing left is cleaning the blender!

After over doing the Kale Smoothie a couple of weeks back, we have branched out to making a blueberry, banana, pineapple, kiwi fruit and coconut water smoothie. I know the name doesn’t say much about it, but this flavour combination is tasty as well as healthy!

Using a combination of frozen fruits we had in the freezer and adding some fresh kiwi fruit we had we ended up with a flavour packed drink.

Blueberries are delicious, they’re also packed with fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants and are something we always try and keep around whether they are fresh or frozen. When added to this smoothie they not only add some yummy berry flavour they give the drink an amazing vibrant colour! This drink is definitely one I can see us drinking for the next couple of weeks till we have a new winning combination.

Kale Smoothie

If you are like us this weekend and have indulged in one too many hot cross buns and far too many Easter eggs – this recipe for a Kale Smoothie is the perfect solution to get you feeling healthier!

There are sooo many recipes for green smoothies around at the moment and if you are like me I never thought twice about them. A couple of weeks ago Brooke jumped on the bandwagon and lucky me got the honor of being her guinea pig when she made one. To my surprise the drink was actually quite tasty and wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I was expecting.

Using a combination of kale, coconut water, ice, banana and pineapple this drink is not only dairy free, the sweet pineapple balances the flavour giving the drink a nice fresh and sweet flavour. For our recipe we used kale given it’s still the hip “super food” at the moment and it is ridiculously cheap to pick up a big bunch from the markets. You can substitute the kale with fresh spinach if you like or use a combination of the two glorious greens. However for this drink to have the added benefits you are after you want to ensure you use as least 1 ½ cups minimum.

To make simply add all the ingredients in the blender and blitz for at least 1 to 2 minutes till your drink is frothy. This will ensure all the kale is broken up and will give the drink an almost milky texture. To make your life easier and for those looking for a quick breakfast substitute or snack, freeze your chopped banana and pineapple to ensure your drink is nice and cold and then you don’t need to add ice! Once you have blitzed your drink well simply serve up and enjoy this vibrant drink!
